This is a complicated question that requires a bit more than a simple yes or no! First, let’s look at some background information on accreditation. For instance, what does it mean to be accredited? Accreditation is not necessarily required in order to operate, but it’s a good thing to have! A school that has gone through the accreditation process shows the world that it has met certain rigorous educational standards and practices. It also mean that a school has a plan for continuous improvement and growth, as well as a plan to monitor and support student achievement. Does having accreditation mean that the school’s curriculum is tied to National Common Core Standards? Not necessarily. That is why at ORVED we are looking at two things: pursuing accreditation and ensuring all courses are Common Core aligned.

Is ORVED accredited? Currently, we are pursuing accreditation through AdvancED. Accreditation is a long process, one that a school cannot begin to pursue until it already exists. We are making progress and look forward to the day when we can tout our accreditation through a nationally recognized accrediting body.

How might this impact your student? All districts who have signed cooperative agreements with ORVED have agreed to recognize and transcript the classes we offer. Our classes meet state and national standards. You can rest assured that when a student takes a class through Oregon Virtual Education, that student will receive a high quality online education.

Oregon Virtual Education (ORVED) was formed in 2009 as a program of the Northwest Regional ESD in cooperation with ESDs around Oregon. Since its founding, ORVED has evolved into an approved virtual public charter school system with two sponsoring school districts. ORVED provides online courses to students in grades 6-12. Every course includes online curriculum, support, and an Oregon licensed teacher.

ORVED has no corporate alliances, shareholders, or exclusive contracts. Through its policies and practices, ORVED is committed to helping Oregon schools personalize learning for all students. Governance is provided by a board of directors representing OSBA, COSA, OEA, OAESD, and Chalkboard Project. ORVED enters into cooperative agreements with schools to provide students with a hybrid and comprehensive educational experience in which students participate fully in their local school and in ORVED’s online learning program.

Although ORVED enrolls full time students, the greatest utilization of ORVED’s offerings are by students enrolled in local school districts (over 90% of course registrations). The average student participating in ORVED takes 1 or 2 online courses at a time, while staying engaged with their local brick-and-mortar school for their other courses and activities. Students begin courses when they are ready and they work at their own pace. Although students have 18 weeks to complete each course, many students find that they are able to complete a course in 12-14 weeks because they are able to work at their own pace. Some students take courses during summer. This freedom from Carnegie units (which award credits based on “seat time”) keeps the program centered on individual student needs. There is no concept of “seat time” in ORVED — we focus on making sure a student reaches proficiency in a class.

Guidance counselors and administrators in cooperating school districts purchase courses for their students for a variety of reasons: to provide access to courses not available in their school, solve scheduling conflicts, enhance TAG opportunities, provide credit recovery, lower class sizes, and to provide education to students unable to attend school for medical or disciplinary reasons. Generally speaking, cooperating schools use ORVED to strengthen and supplement their local program.

At ORVED, our desire is to work with districts to create online programs and options that meet local need and ensure that individual students have equitable education through access to high-quality online learning.

At ORVED, we believe in the potential of all youth and we’re proud of the successes of the students in our courses! We know from experience that all students can be successful in ORVED classes. What does it take to be successful online? While each student needs vary for each individual, there are some common steps parents and schools can take to support students: Create a quiet environment where the student can study — this can be a computer lab at school or a desk at home. Have the student work on homework (or online classwork) at the same time every day.
Teach students how to advocate for themselves — if they get stuck on a lesson, have them contact the teacher immediately for help. Our teachers love to talk with students!

ORVED offers a unique partnership with school districts around Oregon. We work with districts to provide individual students hybrid opportunities that meet the needs of the individuals. Most of our students take one or two classes online with us while staying enrolled and active in their local “brick and mortar” school. Some students come to us for half of their classes, and a smaller percentage take 100% of their classes online.

What does this mean for your student? Call our office — 503-614-1300 — and we’ll be happy to discuss options for your student and answer any questions you have.

It’s been a busy two weeks at ORVED headquarters! We love the hustle and bustle because it keeps us actively focused on what really matters: students and their success! On October 8, we welcomed a group of teachers for our latest Teaching Online 101 seminar. This seminar is offered free of charge to educators in Oregon who are curious about teaching in an online environment — whether or not they are or plan to work for ORVED. As Oregon’s not-for-profit online charter school we believe that it is our responsibility to share our knowledge about online education with teachers, administrators, parents and students around the state. If you’re interested in attending a Teaching Online 101 class, contact our office or keep an eye on our website for details. On October 15 and October 17 we offered a Working with ORVED seminar for school counselors, administrators, registrars, and district personnel. This was an incredible opportunity for us to help schools determine how to identify students that might be the best fit for online learning, become familiar with ORVED procedures, and think about how they want to incorporate online learning into their district.
